Since 30 April 2014, the developer SY Kim has covered many questions regarding the game in Korean and English at TOS Official Blog.

Post CBT1 Question & Answers

  • Various keyboard controls were tested during development. But it has been concluded that ToS will be played using a keyboard. Gamepad is expected to be compatible during CBT2.
  • Stamina limits character movement during early stage. But as player rank increases, stamina may influence character skills, e.g. Rodelero Shield Charge.
  • Swap weapon feature will be added later using the “tab” key so that players can switch weapon and use the skills that are limited by weapons.
  • Character voices will be improved after CBT1.
  • Developer misjudged boss difficulty levels. Many CBT1 testers adopted to the game very quickly. Boss monsters who telegraphed their attack positions will gradually disappear in later stages of the game. Only Oracle will be able to foresee the Boss's next attack.
  • New class: Plague Doctor.
  • There were no limit on levels in CBT1. However, contents were limited to only Rank 4 classes.
  • Music scores will be added in the future if developer decided to produce OST CDs for Tree of Savior.
  • Descriptions will be added in party search for improved search functionality.
  • “Party Events” such as boss hunting, mission or quests will be emphasized in CBT2.
  • More companions types will be added later in the future. They can be bought in other cities.
  • Players can change hair and eye colour in the game, as obtainable features.
  • CBT2 detailed schedule has not been set. However, it is expected to start in Spring 2015 and contents up to Rank 6 will be opened up for testing.

#1 Question and Answers about Tree of Savior

  • Tree of Savior is defined completely as an MMORPG. However, during quests, cut scenes and event scenes, player may be temporary switched to independent mode to avoid interruption.
  • Tree of Savior is played fully using a keyboard, mouse may not be used.
  • Player's gender is not linked to character's gender.
  • There are four basic classes in the game; Swordsman, Wizard, Archer and Cleric. It is possible to further develop the class without switching to an upper class.
  • Maps in the game are zoned.
  • Different classes have exclusive costumes. Player can wear accessories on hair, head, weapons and shields.
  • There are no plans for Player versus Player (PvP) yet. However, there will be some kind of tournaments where single or party players can attend. Developers are also planning on large scale PvP contents.
  • Large volume of quests are prepared, but most of them are not mandatory.
  • Quests are all registered in Adventure Journal.

  • Explains the story of Tree of Savior.
  • Number of character slots is determined by the barracks size. Players will start with four character slots.
  • Server-wide chatting is available using a microphone.
  • Developers are planning to have a market for players to register their items. Auctions is also available in the market.
  • Level cap of 100 in CBT.
  • Players will start with four classes in the game and branch out to a total of 80 classes in the game.
  • Players can decide to not advance to upper classes and only train basic class to upgrade existing skills.
  • Bosses are not hard to beat if players understand their movements. Bosses in raids and fields will be more difficult.
  • Mouse usage in the game is very limited. Character movement is mostly done via keyboard control.

  • Chatting system is similar to a smartphone messenger and also supports offline messaging.
  • Using the keyboard:
    • For melee characters, their attacks are directed towards monsters nearby.
    • For skills such as healing and other damage skills, they use a method called the buff zones.
  • For ranged characters, their attacks are targeted to the enemy closest in front of their eyes.
  • You can manually target the further monster by pressing Shift + cursor key.
    • Archer can move while attacking enemy, but damage may be affected depending on distances towards monsters.
  • Tree of Savior can be played on Mac through Boot Camp (requires Windows installation).
  • At the moment, there is no Assassin or Thief class. However, there is Rogue, Corsair and Wugushi class.

  • Developers have temporarily included a recording feature in the game for ease of game development. The decision to allow players to record is not decided yet. Screenshots is possible in the game.
  • The party feature will be modified after the Focus Group Test (FGT).
  • Cards are available in the game, but unlike Ragnarok Online, the cards have no effect on items.
  • Item and EXP obtained from monsters are fixed. But if players' level is too high, the EXP gain will start to diminish.
  • Items are fixed by category and can be improved by combining jewels on items.
  • There will not be guild system in CBT.
  • Hoplite is a class who uses one handed spear and a shield. This class will become empowered when a Centurion class is nearby.
  • Wugushi (巫蠱師) is a class who specializes in making and using poisons.
  • Characters in the video clips are left-handed because it is more visible to do so.
  • Dagger is a sub-weapon in TOS. Sub-Weapons are used on the left hand and can be used by pressing the C key.
  • Monsters spawn in random locations but they are made to group together.
  • No plans to change music on each map.
  • After leveling up, 1 stat point is given. Players can choose to allocate stat points on any four stats.
  • Pets and mounts are Companions similar but different. They can help you in battle or transportation or in other ways. Level of companion closeness can be increased.

  • Transportation methods include warping between statues of Vakarine, the Goddess of the Evening Star or using warp items.
  • When using certain skills that casts on certain spots on the ground:
    • Hold skill hotkey, select location using directional keys then release skill hotkey.
    • Alternatively, if you hold and release skill hotkey, skill will be cast in front of players character.
  • There are abnormal status (such as stunned) on characters, there are de-buffs for them as well.
  • Companions occupy Barracks slots and can be shared across other characters in the same barracks.
  • When players start the game, they can pick a companion to join with any character into the field.
  • The developers have plan for companion equipment.
  • Character voices are sound effects, and only prototype at the moment.
  • Some skills can be collaborated together between classes. e.g. Sadhu can give Vitality to other classes.
  • Attack and skill damage depends on monsters' species, size, defense, attribute of attacks, skills and de-buff status.
  • Dual long swords on both hands has not been confirmed yet in TOS.

  • Companion evolution system is not implemented in the game yet. However, player's companion can up level, attributes and equip items.
  • Player can move to a bigger and more expensive barracks to add more characters in the game.
  • Monsters will drop items and in-game currency. Items can be sold to NPC or used for crafting.
  • There is a Monk class who uses fists in battles.
  • There are special classes such as Appraiser or Shepherd. There are various master NPCs to help the growth of their respective classes.
  • Archer does not have to buy arrows. However special arrows are needed for certain skills. Fletcher is a class that can help make special arrows.

  • Player can choose to play the game freely or complete a only major quests.
  • Monk class can equip diverse weapons.
  • SoundTeMP works on in-game musics and created musics for TOS. Sevin founded SoundTeMP and is currently the sound director of TOS.
  • There are classes who specializes in battle and others that are irrelevant in battles. Fisherman and cook class may be added in the future.
  • New classes introduction: Linker, Psychokino, Necromancer and Sadhu.

  • Characters can jump onto roofs and other objects in the game.
  • “Agility” stats allow characters to evade monsters' attacks.
  • Sorcerer like Necromancer can summon monsters, but method of control is different.
  • Most skills can be learned without requirements, however some skills requires prerequisites in order to be learned.
  • When switching to higher class, existing class skills will not disappear.
  • Player can also opt to wear previous class costumes after switching to higher class.
  • New classes introduction: Cataphract, Chronomancer, Quarrel Shooter, Bokor.

  • There is no day and night system in the game.
  • There are hidden contents in-game such as treasure chests.
  • Marriage system is not in the game at the moment, but IMC Games may add this if a lot of people want the feature.
  • Costumes are separate from armour that give defensive attributes. Different costumes give no advantage to stats, and exclusive costumes can be obtained when moving to a higher class.
  • Chronomancer can restore past time, but this skill can be used often. Dead friend or monsters will resurrect and items obtained in the future will still exist when past time is restored.
  • New classes introduction: Thaumaturge, Archer, Pyromancer, Centurion.

  • In Rest Mode, HP restoration is improved. HP can be restored even faster by setting up a fire place. This effect will affect other people as well.
  • During rest mode, players can also do various activities such as crafting consumables.
  • A few classes are based on some country's specific cultural areas and historical heritage.
  • No plans on syncing the game with mobile devices as of yet.
  • [Formation is a Skills where you only use it when it is needed. The developers are not worried that it may be used for trolling.
  • When a Chronomancer restore time on a certain place, that place will be distorted for some time and will not allow for misuse of skill.
  • Hackapell is a mounted archer type class.
  • A few of the development staffs love the BGM music from Symphonix. So they signed a contract with them because the developers believed that their music fits very well into a few occasions in TOS.
  • In-game voices are all prototypes at the moment. Voices of developers and designers are recorded in the studio's recording booth. All voices will be localized and reworked for the official release.
  • Players will be given choice to choose voice packs like how they choose languages in the game.
  • Items Updates
    • ★ indicates item grade. More ★ = higher grade.
    • Certain items have Splash and Critical Occurrences.
    • Items which your character can equip depends on level and class.
    • Item Potential indicates the amount of time an item can be upgraded. The gauge decreases by one for every successful upgrade.
    • There are four levels of Uniqueness of item.
    • Each items has its own weight.
    • There is a limit on how players equip their character. When the character exceeds maximum weight, movement speed will be affected and cannot obtain new items anymore.
    • Character's stat affects the maximum weight he can carry.
    • If players obtained a full set of equipment, additional options will be activated.
    • Player requires a manual to craft an item.
    • Manuals will be registered in Adventure Journal.
    • When all the ingredients are collected, players can craft the item anytime during rest mode.
    • Players can add names or tool tips for crafted items.
  • Three Methods to Item Enhancement
    1. Advancement - Placing an item on a Moru and hit it to advance to the next level. Level will be indicated by +1, +2 etc.
    2. Jewel - Players can insert four types of jewels (round, quadrangle, diamond and star).
      1. Player can only insert the same shape of jewel in the corresponding hole of the items.
      2. Players can make additional hole at the Ironsmith NPC.
      3. Potential of the item will reduce by 1 after making additional hole.
    3. Magic Amulet - Players can increase item attributes by adding magic amulets. Magic amulets affect item appearance.

  • Each class possesses at least 5 skills.
  • There are a few classes that have skill related to crafting such as Alchemist.
  • Keyboard keys customization is not included yet. Developers are working on it before the commercial launch.
  • The developers will support Chinese language in the game.
  • Classes that deals damage over time to enemies are Fletcher (using special arrows), Wugushi (uses poison) and etc.
  • No classes are locked to a gender.
  • Firewood can be used to lengthen the life of the fire place.
  • Developers are still looking at an optimized solution to customize colour of the costumes in TOC.
  • When items' durability becomes 0, player can not use its maximum performance. Repairs can be done via Ironsmith NPC or Squire class.
  • Closed beta testing is delayed due to overall balance of the game.
  • Developer claim that “staying in the field after log out” is an interesting feature in TOS that will be discussed later.

  • Developer may add tents for players to warm their in-game characters.
  • The idea of throwing torches at enemies were presented but developers took the feature out of the game.
  • Squire can repair items out of town at a cheaper price. Depending on skill level, items' stats may exceed original stats.
  • If peltasta do not pick up its armor after being thrown for a period of time the armor will disappear.
  • Bashing or thrusting are two different methods to use a sword.
  • When pardoner opens a shop, he can stay in the game even after logged out. Same goes to Alchemist when crafting an item.
  • The color of a summoned monster will always be black.
  • Boss monster card will not dissipate when a Sorcerer summons it from the “Grimoire”.
  • Summoning boss monsters consumes SP and stamina.
  • Rogue is an Archer type class that can hide under the ground.
  • Scout is a stronger Archer class.
  • Corsair is a swordsman class who uses both hand weapons repetitively in battles.
  • Tree of Savior will have a Shinobi (Stub) class
  • Party EXP sharing method can be set by the leader: Shared equally or shared based on players' contribution.
  • An Item Potential is depleted by 1 whenever it succeeds an enhancement. Don't enhance your item when Potential falls to 1. You may lose your item.
  • New classes introduction: Highlander, Dievdirbys, Ranger, Oracle
  • The Goddess of Destiny, Laima is the sister of the Goddess of Death, Giltine.

  • Alchemist or other classes specializes in crafting cannot do other activities while performing item crafting.
  • To become Elementalist, you have to go through Pyromancer.
  • There will be a class called Puppeteer in the high ranking class.
  • Carving sculpture will be cancelled when Dievbirbys is attacked while performing the skill. In order to succeed carving, Dievbirbys must stay in the “Safety Zone” cast by Cleric.
  • Horns and ear accessories can be obtained from monsters, crafting or bought from NPC.
  • Players can only see their party members on the mini map.
  • Scout can select a spot on the mini map and reveal enemy locations.
  • Developers have not decide whether to include music related classes.
  • Characters can make poses in game, and obtain more poses later in the game. But they can not dance.
  • Item is not bound to player when acquired from monsters.
  • Players can freely trade their items, but the potential of item reduces by 1 whenever an equipment is traded.

  • Developers adjusted difficulty level of Monsters and modified some of the items based on feedback from Fthe Focus Group Test (FGT).
  • Graphics designers of TOS relied on hand drawing instead of the technology offered by the engine to create a fairy tale impression of the game.
  • Ragnarok Online and Arcturus are not IMC Games' game, the art director Anh Jung Wong has been with the company for a long time.
  • Game engine is internally developed that has been used and updated since “Granado Espada”. Graphics engine uses the same engine used for “Wolfknights”.
  • Mr. Dong Il Kwak from SoundTeMP is now in charge of sound directing for Tree of Savior.
  • CBT is 70% completed.
  • Characters default movement is running, when the stamina depletes, the character will start to walk. Some classes can use dash to avoid attacks.
  • Fireplace is used for Rest Mode
  • Character customization is limited. Players can change class, gender, hairstyle and possibly eye color.
  • All classes can craft in the game.
  • You must acquire the manual to craft an item, the manual will be recorded in Adventure Journal.
  • Certain manuals can be taught to others.
  • Once you have collected all ingredients you can craft the item. Time required for item crafting in “Rest Mode” ranges from few seconds to 10 minutes.

Art Director Anh Jung Won (Maggi) Interview

  • Maggi An Jeong-won (안정원) is the art director who has been working in IMC Games for a long time
  • TOS selected quarter view because timing is very crucial for the game and players can be more immersed with the third person view of quarter view. This is also the reason angle rotation is removed.
  • The designers emphasis on details and wanted to give a fairy tail feeling; most textures are hand drawn.
  • TOS has some dystopian elements which is dark and evil. The details and expression of the game is a combination of bright and darkness.
  • Interactive objects (such as pulling levers) is part of the design.
  • Staffs travel to many places to collect documents for background and costumes.
  • TOS motive is mostly based on Lithuanian mythology.
  • Classes in the game are based on Baltic mythology.

Progress of International Version

  • Hebrew Young is the programmer in charge of Tree of Savior.
  • (At the time of this interview) The programmers have converted all the texts to Unicode.
  • They are making the selection of language in the game possible.
  • When players change the language in the options, all user interface and dialogues will change language.
  • Korean, English and Japanese is supported
  • Translations are not done by natives, the programmers plan to provide a way for players to provide suggestions for all translations.
  • CBT test servers will be in Korea initially. More servers will be added internationally later.
